Tree pruning Brisbane
Expert pruning for stronger, safer trees
If you need tree pruning in Brisbane, you’re in the right place — whether it’s a jacaranda dropping limbs over the driveway, a leggy gum that hasn’t been touched in years, or palms and figs that have outgrown their spot.
Good pruning isn’t just tidying up; it’s removing the dead, diseased and crossing wood that lets light and air back through the canopy and keeps the tree structurally sound. That matters more in our subtropical climate, where trees put on fast, heavy growth and a single summer storm can turn an overloaded limb into a hazard over your roof or power lines.
Our arborists prune to Australian Standard AS 4373 for long-term health and storm resilience — and we’ve been doing it across Brisbane for over 20 years.
The main types of pruning we do
Crown reduction
Carefully bringing down the overall height or spread of a tree, cutting back to good growth points rather than topping it.
It’s one of the most common tree pruning requests in Brisbane — for trees that have outgrown their space or sit near power lines — and a sound way to take storm load off a large, heavy canopy.
Crown thinning
Selectively removing some of the inner branches to open the canopy up, letting more light and air through. Better airflow means less humidity trapped in the canopy, which keeps disease and pests down on species prone to it — a real benefit in our subtropical climate.
Crown lifting
Removing the lower branches to lift the canopy clear of the ground, a roof, a driveway or a fence line. Useful for clearance and sightlines, and for getting light back to the lawn and gardens underneath without taking height off the tree.
Brisbane Tree pruning costs
Pricing depends on the tree and it varies, but across Brisbane, most pruning jobs land around $450, with smaller, straightforward trees starting from about $235 and larger or more difficult work running up toward $1,950.
Where your tree sits in that range comes down to a few things:
- Size and height of the tree
- How many branches need work
- Access and how easy the tree is to reach
- Proximity to your roof, fences or power lines
A small tree in an open backyard is quick and cheap; a tall gum with limbs over the powerlines takes more time, gear and care to do safely.

When to prune in Brisbane
In our subtropical climate, trees never fully shut down, but most slow over the cooler months — making the best window for most pruning between winter to early spring. With less leaf cover the structure is easier to read, cuts seal with less infection risk in the cool dry air, and the tree comes into spring ready to grow.
A few worth-knowing exceptions are where local knowledge matters:
- Flowering trees (jacaranda, poinciana, frangipani) — prune after they finish blooming, so you're not cutting off next season's flowers
- Mangoes and other tropical fruit — prune in the warmer months, after harvest (roughly February to April)
- Storm-damaged or hazardous limbs — any time; safety doesn't wait for a season
Dead, broken or dangerous wood is the exception that’s dealt with year-round, especially heading into Brisbane’s summer storm season.
Council approval and tree pruning limits
For everyday pruning — clearing deadwood, lifting a canopy, tidying growth back off the house — you normally won’t need to involve the council at all.
Routine maintenance on a standard tree is yours to get on with, with no permit required before the work begins. The exception worth checking is a Vegetation Protection Order. If a VPO is in place over your tree, it’s protected specifically by the council, and you’ll need their approval before any significant tree pruning goes ahead. It doesn’t apply to most trees, but it’s the one thing to rule out before booking larger work.
If you’re unsure whether one covers your tree, a quick call to Brisbane City Council will confirm if you need approval before you start. From there, we’ll prune to the proper standard and clear away every bit of green waste when we’re done.

Frequently asked questions
For most trees, winter to early spring is ideal — they’re growing slowly, cuts heal cleanly, and they bounce into spring strongly.
The main exceptions are flowering trees like jacaranda and poinciana, they are best pruned after they bloom. And mango trees are best suited to pruning in the warmer months after harvest.
Dead or hazardous wood can be removed any time.
In most cases you can remove up to 20% of a tree’s live foliage in a 12-month period for maintenance without a permit, as long as the cuts are spread evenly.
However, protected trees may need approval first — like those under a Vegetation Protection Order, in an overlay, or certain species over a set size.
We can check before any work starts.
Done properly, no — good pruning improves a tree’s health, structure and safety.
Problems come from over-pruning or topping, which stresses the tree and causes weak regrowth.
Our arborists prune to Australian Standard AS 4373, taking only what’s needed and cutting in the right places so your tree heals well.
Yes. Mangoes are best pruned after harvest to manage size and keep them productive, while palms need their old or dead fronds removed rather than true canopy pruning — over-stripping a palm does it harm. We’ll handle each correctly for the species.
