Tree lopping FAQ

The questions customers ask us most, in their words and ours. Can't see yours? Call 0438 988 985 or send it with your quote request.

Quotes and cost

How much does tree removal cost?
It mostly depends on the size and type of tree, how easy it is to get to, what's nearby, and whether you'd like the stump ground out. Quotes are free, and we'll beat most written quotes. See what affects the cost of tree removal, or estimate your cost.
Do I need to be onsite for the quote?
You don't need to be onsite unless you have a specific request or the tree or trees are difficult to describe. Normally, if you're not onsite, we'll call you to confirm your request.
Do you beat other quotes?
Usually, yes: we'll beat most written quotes. Send us the quote you have with your quote request, or mention it when you call.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes, our minimum job is $300. Every job brings a crew and their gear to your place, so we can't do it for much less. The quote is free.

Licences, insurance and council

Are you licensed for tree lopping?
Yes. All staff are qualified and licensed for all aspects of tree work.
Do you have a Level 5 arborist?
When a job needs a consulting arborist's report, for a council application for example, we bring in a Level 5 arborist. Day to day, our own qualified crew does the work.
Do you have insurance?
Yes. We're fully insured (see details).
Do I need council approval?

Often you don't, but some trees are protected. In Brisbane City Council's area, permit applications are free, and you generally don't need one to prune up to 20% of a tree's live foliage in 12 months, to remove a tree whose whole trunk is within 3 m of your house (on blocks up to 4,000 m²), or to maintain garden plants with a trunk under 30 cm. In the City of Moreton Bay, including Redcliffe, most backyard trees don't need approval, but large native habitat trees, listed significant trees and trees in mapped environmental areas do.

Call your local council if you're not sure whether any protection applies, or ask us when you book your quote. There's more in our guide to permits and power lines.

Family, community and the environment

How long have you been operating?
Since 1993. We're family owned and run: Patrick started in garden care in 1993 and has been working with trees for more than 20 years.
Are you the same business as Colourful Tree Lopping?
Yes. Colourful Tree Lopping and Colourful Tree Services are the same family business, with the same crew and the same numbers. Some of our Google reviews use the older name.
Are you a family business?
Yes. Colourful Tree Services is family owned and run, and has been operating since 1993. One customer called us "the most beautiful family run business".
Are you environmentally friendly?
Yes. We practise eco-friendly arboriculture and preserve trees wherever it's safe. Very little goes to waste: the green waste from our jobs goes back into mulch. Our free Brisbane tree guide also shows which trees are weeds, and what to plant instead.

On the day

Do I need to be onsite when the job is done?
Only if we've arranged for you to be there. Otherwise we'll invoice you for the work afterwards.
Do you clean up after yourselves?
Yes. When the job is finished, your yard and gardens are left clean and tidy, as if we were never there.
What equipment do you use?
We only use the very best equipment, including Stihl chainsaws, Bandit wood chippers and an elevated work platform run by licensed operators. The platform needs as little as 860 mm of side access and reaches up to 20 metres, so we can work safely on big trees in tight backyards.
Why can't I do it myself?
Doing it yourself carries a real risk of harm and injury. Let the experts, with years of experience, do it for you. Read about how we keep every job safe.

Trees, hedges and bamboo

Can you advise on choosing the right trees?
Absolutely. We give advice on tree selection based on soil type, climate and space, and our free Brisbane tree guide covers more than 100 trees.
Can you tell me if my tree is healthy or dangerous?
Yes. A tree health assessment looks for disease, pests and hazards, with honest advice on what to do next. If a tree can be kept, we'll say so.
Do you do hedges or bamboo?
Yes. We trim, level and maintain hedges, and we remove bamboo. The only garden jobs we don't do are mowing and whipper-snipping. See hedging and bamboo.
