When a tree needs to come out

  • It's dead, dying or diseased. Not sure? A tree health assessment will tell you.
  • It's been damaged in a storm, or it's leaning, split or dropping limbs. See storm damage cleanup.
  • It's too close to the house, fences or other structures.
  • You're building, renovating or reclaiming space in the yard.
  • It's a weed. Brisbane City Council lists trees such as umbrella trees, camphor laurels and cocos palms as weeds. See Brisbane's weed trees in our tree guide.

Preserving trees is always our aim, but not at the cost of safety. We'll give you honest advice on the best solution, and the quote is free. Sometimes pruning is all the tree needs. When a tree does come out, very little goes to waste: the branches go through our chipper and become mulch.

Big trees, tight spots

We remove trees from seemingly inaccessible positions, including large and very large trees. Our climbers and our elevated work platform let us work safely around houses, fences, sheds and gardens.

The platform needs as little as 860 mm of side access, reaches up to 20 metres, and is run by licensed operators.

How we remove a tree

  1. Free quote

We look at the tree, the access, and anything close by. You don't need to be home.

  2. Plan for safety

Every job gets a risk assessment and the right gear, from climbing equipment to the EWP.

  3. Careful removal

The tree comes down safely and in a controlled way, with branches chipped on site.

  4. Stump and clean-up

We can grind the stump, then leave the yard clean and tidy.

Dead and dangerous tree removal

Dead trees

Dead trees need extra care. The wood is no longer sound, the trunk may be rotten inside, and limbs can give way without warning, so a dead tree should be assessed first and taken down with the right gear, often from an elevated work platform rather than by climbing it. In the City of Moreton Bay a dead native tree over 80 cm across may still count as a habitat tree, so check before it comes out. Not sure it's dead? Book a tree health assessment.

Dangerous trees

Brisbane City Council's signs of an immediate hazard are “split tree trunks” and “leaning tree(s) with soil upheaval”. A tree showing them can be removed without a permit, but Council wants photographs, and an arborist report if it asks, within 10 business days, and can take compliance action if the tree wasn't an immediate and significant threat. So photograph it first. Cracks at the base, soil movement and sudden leaf loss are warning signs too: a reason to have the tree looked at, not an emergency. More on permits in our cost guide.

What affects the cost of tree removal?

Every tree is different, so we quote each job for free after seeing it. Things that usually affect the price of tree removal include:

  • The size and type of tree
  • How easy it is to get to the tree
  • What's nearby: the house, fences, sheds or power lines
  • Whether you'd like the stump ground out
  • What you'd like done with the timber

All FAQs

Do I need council approval to remove a tree?
Often not, but some trees are protected. Call your local council if you're not sure whether any protection applies to your tree. Our cost guide covers the Brisbane City Council and Moreton Bay rules.
Can you remove the stump as well?
Yes. We grind stumps down so they can't sprout again, and clean up the chips afterwards. See stump grinding.
Can you remove a tree near power lines?
Trees near power lines are a job for a qualified tree service, never a do-it-yourself one. You're generally responsible for keeping trees clear of the service line from the street to your house, and Energex looks after trees around the street power lines. If a line has to be disconnected for the work, Energex may charge a fee.
Is there a cheapest time of year to remove a tree?
The price depends on the tree, the access and what's nearby, not the time of year. Queensland's storm season runs through summer, so if a tree worries you, it's worth having it looked at before then.
What happens to the timber?
The branches go through our chipper and become mulch, so very little goes to waste, and we take the green waste away unless you'd like to keep the mulch or some of the wood. See mulch.
Why can't I do it myself?
Doing it yourself carries a real risk of harm and injury. Let a qualified, insured team with years of experience do it for you.
